Believe it or not, there are laws for pets too!  Please be sure to abide by them so you don’t get yourself or your little buddy in trouble.

LEASH LAWS BY MUNCIPIALITY

Cities and counties each have their own laws stating how pets are required to be leashed or confined.  You can usually find the applicable laws on that city or county’s web site.

BREED SPECIFIC LAWS BY MUNCIPALITY

Some cities have specific laws that prohibit certain breeds of dogs, often “bully breeds,” from residing in that city or requiring them to be registered with the city.  These are also known as “vicious dog” ordinances and can also be found on the city’s website.

LOCAL ZONING ORDINANCES

Your city or  county may also have a regulation limiting the number of pets you may have at your home and require special zoning if you have more than the number allowed.    Contact your city’s zoning department either by phone or through their website to determine your local zoning ordinances.

STATE LAWS

There are so many state laws regarding all things animal in Alabama that there is no easy way for us to present them to you precisely. Please click HERE and then find “Code of Alabama” on the left tab. Then go to “view” and select one of the following: “Title 3” (this entire Title pertains to animals), “Title 9” (Chapter 11) or “Title 13A” (Chapters 11-14 to 16; Chapters 11-240 to 247; Chapter 12-4 to 6), you will be taken to pet related and animal cruelty laws which we are all concerned about. This website, provided by the State of Alabama, should be your most up to date reference tool available.
